In August 2012, Hiphop Tamizha, comprising Adhi and Jeeva, released their first album, Hiphop Tamizhan. It was the first Tamil hip-hop album to have been made by Indian musicians and turned out to be a success.
The hip-hop duo later branched out into film and became popular composers, scoring blockbusters like Thani Oruvan and Meesaya Murukku. Now, 10 years later, the duo speaks exclusively to us about their journey so far and their future plans, which include creating an ecosystem to help aspiring hip-hop artists. Excerpts:
Looking back, what were the challenges and opportunities when you started out?
Back then, there was no streaming. You had to make an album on physical media, like CDs. Now, people can set up a studio in their homes, but at that time, it wasn’t affordable. You did not have the technology of today that has made it easy now.
You had to book a studio to record your album, for which you needed money. Then, you had to take it to a label, which would then decide if they wanted to take you on board or not. When you look at the live music scene, it was rock music that was dominating. Hip-hop hardly had a space there as well. In clubs, they used to play only English music.
It was very rare to see local artists being supported by clubs, and even if that happened, it used to be a rare case. So, if you were an artist back then, most of these channels were blocked. Now, you can sit in your bedroom, record, and make your music reach an audience. There are artists who are pulling it off with just a laptop and a sound card. In that sense, starting our journey was a challenge. You needed access to people and technology, even though you had talent.
