Rjv Ernesto proposed the concept of History Street Academics in 1999 as a small group for spoken word poetry and creating pause tapes. Later, through hip-hop forums on Myspace and Orkut, he met Haris Saleem. They enlisted Amjad Nadeem, Abhimanyu Raman, and Pranav in 2009 to advance as a hip-hop collective after recording a number of demo tracks. Before leaving to pursue his career as a keyboardist for Thaikkudam Bridge, keyboardist and music producer Ruthin Thej worked with the group to produce a few singles. Later, DJ/producer Vivek Radhakrishnan joined the group and contributed a bass-focused sound.

They began working with Muhsin Parari\’s Mappila Lahala cultural music group to release politically charged singles starring veteran actor Mamukkoya and national award-winning composer Bijibal. In order to release singles and work with experimental theatre acts, the group also established the avant-garde hip-hop project Palakkadan Dystopia. The group has since performed shows that fuse spoken word, theatre, hip-hop music, and graffiti. After years of working on singles and compilations, the group released \”Loop,\” a full multilingual album loosely based on the seven deadly sins.

On July 13, 2019, a crowd of people demanded that the venue\’s staff play Kannada songs instead of the band\’s original Malayalam tracks because they were in Bengaluru, interrupting a live performance of Street Academics, Bandish Projekt, and Swadesi. After a brief intermission, the group was escorted off stage. Rapper/vocalist Amjad was detained by the police following the performance along with a few of his friends, allegedly for causing a public nuisance. Later, the venue\’s management apologised to Street Academics in a public statement for the incident. The group performed \”Hara Hara\” live at Kozhikode protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act after releasing the song and music video.
